By Assistant Chief Tim Llewellyn
November 9, 2018

The Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are continuing a statewide initiative to ensure car seats are safe.

According to AAFD Captain Al Minjock, as part of a nationwide effort, State Police will will be offering free car seat checks at the AAFD Fire Headquarters on Route 228 in Adams from 9:00 AM until noon on December 1st.

Troopers who are certified as Child Passenger Safety Technicians will check car seats for proper fit and suitability, and participants will receive instruction on proper installation and child restraint, according to a press release.

Under Pennsylvania law, children under the age of four must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat, Minjock said. A provision, signed into law in 2016, states that children under two be secured in a rear-facing car seat. Children ages four to age eight must use an appropriate booster seat.

No appointment is necessary, anyone interested in receiving a free car seat safety check, or in simply receiving information on child car seats is welcome to stop by. AAFD Firefighters will be on site as well to offer pamphlets on volunteer firefighter membership opportunities & holiday fire safety tips. They will also to offer Fire Station and Fire Truck tours to anyone interested.
