| In the lead-up to Memorial Day, crews made their rounds to 13 cemeteries in the Mars area to mark 225 graves with a bronze monument and a service flag. The tradition evolved from the former Mars VFC, and includes those from Valencia VFC. We’ve highlighted a few of those leaders from earlier generations.
“Butch” Leonberg: he is the man responsible for starting this tradition. Also served many years as Assistant Chief. His wife Alice was active in the Auxiliary.
Russ McCandless: served as a line officer. Also served as the Mars Borough Superintendent of Public Works for years.
Lester Kennedy: Charter member, served in various officer positions, including Fire Chief. Also served as Mayor of Mars Borough for multiple terms.
Charles Marburger: served in various officer positions, including multiple terms as the Company President. His wife Patti was active in the Auxiliary.
Dave Coon: served in several officer positions, including Company Warden. Also served for many years as Police Chief of Mars Borough.
Our thanks to each for their many, many years of dedicated service! |
